Student Travel Grant update

The UK Government (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) currently advises against all but essential travel to Israel. It further advises, in the UK context, that travel insurance could be invalidated if a person travels against UK Government advice. To maintain compliance with that advice, it is with very great regret, therefore, that the Committee of the AIAS has suspended the student travel grant programme for the summer of 2024. We will resume this core activity of the AIAS as soon as the situation permits. As part of our continuing commitment to students, we are planning to invite an archaeologist from Israel to lead a UK based research-led workshop for students from Israel and the UK to explore together the archaeology and ancient history of Israel and the surrounding region – please look out for updates in the near future.

A Message For Our Members

“As we come to the end of 2023, I’d like to thank all those who have done so much to support the Anglo-Israel Archaeological Society during the year.

Special thanks are due to Professor Oded Lipschits of Tel Aviv University for his magnificent Jubilee tour in the spring, and for hosting students funded by our grant programme at Tel Azekah.

At this very difficult time, I would also like to pay tribute to all those involved in the forensic archaeological work in the villages destroyed in the attacks on Israel, and to those Israeli archaeologists engaged in the task of recovering the remains of those murdered on October 7”.

ANNOUNCEMENT

On behalf of the Anglo-Israel Archaeological Society, we want to express our horror and deep sorrow at the events unfolding in Israel.

Our thoughts are with all those who are suffering, through bereavement, or as victims of violence.

AIAS stands in solidarity with all the people of Israel. In particular, we offer our steadfast support to our members, colleagues and friends in the archaeology community in Israel.

We earnestly hope for peace and a swift resolution to this conflict.
